Year in Review: Mike Kelloway announces over half-a-billion dollars in federal investments in 2024

December 29, 2024 — Sydney, Nova Scotia

Mike Kelloway, Member of Parliament for Cape Breton—Canso, is celebrating this year after announcing over half-a-billion dollars in federal investments for our region in 2024.

These investments totalled $571,154,076.00 for initiatives across Cape Breton, northeastern Nova Scotia, and the broader region. It includes support for affordable housing, seniors, at-risk youth, community infrastructure, arts and education, local economic development and more.

The largest single announcement this year took place in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, alongside Canada’s Energy Minister and a representative of the Federal Republic of Germany. The investment of $300 million will establish a green hydrogen trade alliance with Germany, who will match the Canadian contribution. Cape Breton and northeastern Nova Scotia will be a primary proponent of this investment, given our region’s significant emerging renewable energy industry.

Another highlight for MP Kelloway this year took place in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Through his capacity as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, he announced $74 million to help rebuild small craft harbours in our province. This funding will prove essential for coastal communities in Nova Scotia, given the province’s recent sequence of damaging storms.

These achievements also followed a major housing announcement by MP Kelloway in February, alongside the Prime Minister of Canada and various community leaders. At this event, $13.3 million in federal support was committed toward accelerating the construction of 367 local housing units over the next three years.

Other major investments for this year included critical support for both the Sydney (CYQY) and Port Hawkesbury (CYPD) airports, upgrades to Cape Breton University’s Canada Games Complex, infrastructure for Inverness County, support for the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, and improved public transit in the CBRM.

All of these accomplishments join over 100 other local announcements to complete Kelloway’s half-billion-dollar total this year — an amount rarely seen, if not never-before-seen, in terms of announcements in our area.

Quotes

“This year has been absolutely incredible in terms of federal investments for Cape Breton, northeastern Nova Scotia, and our entire region. Half-a-billion dollars doesn’t happen by accident — it takes hard work in Ottawa and strong collaboration among local stakeholders. This massive funding achievement represents Nova Scotians advocating for the future of Nova Scotia, and the federal government responding in a big way. I’m deeply humbled to have played a role in this process.”
